In search of the ‘Silver Darlings’, 24th Sept – 1st Oct, £575 all inclusive
Between Whitby and Great Yarmouth lie coastal towns once crammed with sailing vessels which fished for the ‘silver darlings’ in the shallow waters of the North Sea. It was one of Britain’s most important maritime industries until mechanised trawling led to the collapse of the fish stocks. Nowadays, the sailing trawlermen are confined to history, but their stories and sacrifices are remembered in a rich folk tradition.
The week will be led by artist and singer, Laura Copsey. Laura grew up in East Anglia and will be retracing the history of a folk song about one of the many tragedies which befell coastal towns from Scarborough to Great Yarmouth.
