We will begin this leg of the programme in Stromness, a stunning town at the Western end of Scapa Flow. From there we will undertake an adventurous passage heading South across the Pentland Firth to round Duncansby Head, the most North Easterly point of the mainland.

Like much of the East coast of Britain, this area relied upon herring fishing and whaling. The great whaling port of Dundee is now transforming itself into a creative and technological powerhouse. Nowadays it is dominated by North Sea oil and gas, but this more ancient tradition is still preserved in cultural heritage.

Heading South we’ll pass Robert Stevenson’s Bell Rock Lighthouse, the oldest existing rock lighthouse in the British Isles built on a notorious offshore reef, before coming into Edinburgh – undoubtedly one of the highlights of our programme!
